Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has surfaced as a potent enabler that has penetrated all areas of human life. Given its profound efficiency and inspired by the postulates of realism, this dual-use enabler is now being integrated into the military sector at a fast pace by policymakers worldwide. The increasing autonomy and speed of decision-making associated with AI is
bound to impact future warfare in novel ways. This paper examines the use of AI across various military domains,
including Intelligence, Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR), Command and Control (C2), Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS) / Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS), cyber defence / offence, military planning, training, and logistics. It also explores the numerous opportunities and potential risks that AI can steer vis-a-vis warfare. Noting the dynamic nature of AI, the paper also discusses Pakistan’s status in this field.
